MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN / RankWire.AI / – India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is participating in the G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting and bilateral trade negotiations in the United States. The event takes place in Milwaukee on September 30 and October 1. According to India’s Commerce Ministry, Goyal will also hold a meeting with his U.S. counterpart during his visit. The talks will focus on the India-U.S. Bilateral Trade Agreement and efforts to finalize an interim trade deal based on the joint framework agreed upon in February 2026.

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer is hosting the G20 event, which gathers trade ministers from member economies. The agenda includes discussions on forced labour in global supply chains and the issue of excess production capacity. Additionally, ministers will address the Most-Favoured-Nation principle and trade restrictions related to food. Throughout both days, the U.S. Office of the Trade Representative has scheduled ministerial sessions, alongside industry meetings and events in Milwaukee.
India expressed its intention to promote an open, transparent, and non-discriminatory multilateral trading system centered around the World Trade Organization. The government emphasized the importance of allowing policy flexibility for developing nations. Goyal plans to meet with other participating ministers on the sidelines of the event. These bilateral engagements will explore opportunities for farmers, fishermen, women entrepreneurs, startups, small businesses, and other trade-related sectors involved in both domestic and international markets.
Focus returns to trade agreement negotiations
The India-U.S. trade talks build upon a joint framework announced in February for an interim agreement fostering mutually beneficial trade. That framework reaffirmed ongoing negotiations toward a broader Bilateral Trade Agreement and outlined commitments on tariffs and market access for industrial and agricultural goods. It also included discussions on medical devices, ICT, standards, and supply chain collaboration. Both governments continue efforts to finalize the interim agreement within the context of broader bilateral negotiations.
Goyal’s U.S. itinerary runs from September 29 to October 5, extending beyond the G20 meetings. He plans to meet with business leaders and investors in Milwaukee and Chicago, representing sectors such as manufacturing, consumer goods, agribusiness, retail, and technology. His schedule features roundtable discussions with startups and other companies, while in Chicago, he will also meet with professional associations representing the Indian community and participate in scheduled commemorative events during his visit.
G20 discussions focus on supply chains and capacity issues
Milwaukee hosts a Global Forum on Steel Excess Capacity on September 30, as part of the G20 agenda. G20 ministers are also scheduled to tour a Rockwell Automation facility before the formal opening session later that day. Additional ministerial meetings will occur on October 1. The U.S., holding the G20 presidency in 2026, has prioritized discussions on forced labour, excess capacity, food trade, and the Most-Favoured-Nation principle at the summit.
India and the United States began negotiations for a broader bilateral trade agreement in February 2025. The February 2026 framework maintained momentum on those talks while establishing the foundation for an interim arrangement. Goyal’s meetings in Milwaukee are part of this ongoing process. Discussions will aim to advance the bilateral agreement and finalize the interim deal outlined in the joint framework. The G20 program will proceed through October 1, while Goyal’s overall U.S. visit extends until October 5.
