MUSCAT, OMAN / RankWire.AI / – Oman’s total electricity generation increased by 4.3% compared to the same period in 2025, reaching 37,481.8 gigawatt-hours through August 2026. During the first eight months of 2025, output was 35,935.3 GWh. According to initial figures from the National Centre for Statistics and Information, growth was observed in several governorates, contributing approximately 1,546.5 GWh to the national total over this period. In August alone, production hit 5,743.9 GWh, up from 5,676.9 GWh in July.

Muscat Governorate experienced the most significant surge in electricity output, with a year-over-year increase of 204.8%. Al Dakhiliyah saw a growth of 44.1%, while Al Wusta’s output rose by 8.4%. Electricity production in North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah increased by 5.5%. Dhofar also saw a rise, with electricity output climbing 4.6% during the January to August period. The data indicates a broad expansion across most of the regions included in the national statistics.
Conversely, North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah experienced a combined decline of 16.4% in electricity production. Musandam’s output stood at 376.0 GWh, showing little change from the same period of 2025. The regional figures reveal significant variation in electricity growth across Oman during this timeframe. The National Centre for Statistics and Information characterized these figures as preliminary, with data covering electricity output through the end of August 2026.
Net Electricity Generation Sees 4.6% Increase
Oman’s net electricity generation grew by 4.6% through August, reaching 36,463.9 GWh compared to 34,871.8 GWh in the same period of 2025. This figure accounts for regional purchases by the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company and the Rural Areas Electricity Company. Muscat again led growth, with net production rising 204.4%. Al Dakhiliyah increased by 44.2%, while Al Wusta and Dhofar posted gains of 9.1% and 7.6%, respectively. Overall, net output increased by roughly 1,592.1 GWh year-on-year.
Net electricity figures for North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah increased by 5.4% from the previous year. Meanwhile, North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah experienced a decline of 16.6%. Musandam’s net electricity production was recorded at 368.0 GWh, showing no significant change from the previous year. The regional data generally mirrored the trends seen in total electricity output. Overall, Oman’s net electricity generation remained above the levels recorded during the first eight months of 2025.
Water Production Declines in Oman
Oman’s water output decreased by 3.5% through August 2026, totaling 330.65 million cubic metres. In the same period of 2025, production reached approximately 342.71 million cubic metres. Muscat’s water production fell by 6.2%, down to roughly 128.07 million cubic metres from about 136.57 million. Other governorates also saw a 3.4% decline, with water production decreasing to roughly 149.90 million cubic metres from 155.19 million cubic metres during the same months last year.
Dhofar was an exception to the trend of declining water output, producing about 52.68 million cubic metres through August, which is a 3.4% increase from approximately 50.94 million cubic metres a year earlier. The latest utility data thus reveal contrasting national trends in electricity and water during the initial eight months of 2026, with electricity output expanding at both total and net levels, while water production overall remained below last year’s figures.
